WENRA adopted a new strategy at its autumn meeting

The autumn plenary meeting of the Western European Nuclear Regulators Association (WENRA) took place in Paris on 14 and 15 November 2023, with László Juhász, Vice-President of the Authority, representing the Hungarian Atomic Energy Agency.

The 146th session of the OECD's Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) Steering Committee for Nuclear Energy was held in Paris on 25-26 October 2023, with the active participation of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority. During the meeting, member states reviewed the various options for NEA’s engagement with Ukraine and Africa and the impact of the suspension of the participation of the Russian Federation in the NEA. A status report was given on the work of the NEA Task Group on Improving the Gender Balance in the Nuclear Sector, on the work of the Committee on Radiological Protection and Public Health, including radiation protection policies and regulatory regimes, review of their application, examination of the radiation protection challenges related to small modular reactors (SMRs), issues related to the management of food safety in the event of a nuclear accident, and on NEA major events.

In line with Council Directive 2014/87/Euratom of 8 July 2014 amending Directive 2009/71/Euratom establishing a Community framework for the nuclear safety of nuclear installations and according to the scope of self-assessment defined by European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group the current Hungarian National Assessment Report aims to present the results of the self-evaluation in the context of the fire protection of nuclear installations operated in Hungary. The specific scope of the assessment as well as the structure and expected content of the various chapters within the National Assessment Report were defined by ENSREG in a dedicated WENRA technical specification document. The report is now available on HAEA’s website.
Workshop at the HAEA on the international and domestic regulation of nuclear trade

Several experts from Hungarian companies participated in the workshop on the international and domestic regulation of nuclear trade on October 18, 2023, which was jointly organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA) within the framework of the IAEA's "Nuclear Trade Analysis" programme. Domestic companies involved in the production and foreign trade of nuclear and nuclear dual-use products and technologies have been invited to the event.
Joint workshop on response with US Department of Energy

The Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA), together with the United States Department of Energy, organised a workshop on the response physical protection function, between 12 and 14 September, 2023 in Budapest. During the event participants were afforded an opportunity to gain an insight into the evaluation of response and the characteristics of the different types of nuclear security exercises.
