On 24 September, 2020, the Paks II. Ltd. has submitted the physical protection licence application that contains the physical protection plan of the new nuclear units, to the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority.
The 64th IAEA General Conference will be held from 21 to 25 September 2020 in Vienna, Austria, where high-ranking representatives from IAEA Member States will hold discussions about several issues. In conjunction with the General Conference a Scientific Forum on Nuclear Power and the Clean Energy Transition will be convened.
From 14 to 18 September, 2020, the IAEA Board of Governors meeting took place at the Agency's headquarters in Vienna, Austria. Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi addressed the Board on important issues, including the agreement with Iran on outstanding safeguards issues and the support to Lebanon following the recent explosion. At the meeting, Hungary thanked the IAEA for its great effort to assist its Member States (Hungary included) in their fights against Covid-19. It was highlighted that each and every country has the right to choose its energy mix, suitable for its own needs and capabilities, and nuclear energy remains a key component of the energy mix of Hungary. It was also pointed out that during the pandemic nuclear safety remains a priority for Hungary, with relevance to the implementation of the new nuclear units as well.
The purpose of the document is to show the progress made and the coverage provided to the countries (Hungary included) in strengthening national capacities for the rapid detection of COVID-19.
The EPREV Follow-up Mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency was originally planned for October 2020 to review the progress based on the recommendations and suggestions of the previous Emergency Preparedness Review Mission in 2016. Due to the pandemic situaton the Follow-up Mission had to be posponed to the first half of 2021.
