Training and examination of IAEA nuclear safeguards inspectors in Hungary

2023.10.03
Training course

Training course for the newcomer nuclear safeguards inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency has been organized at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant from 25-29 September, 2023.

On the first day of the four-day training, the inspectors were given a comprehensive overview of the power plant's technical characteristics, radiation protection rules and the domestic and facility level nuclear material accountancy and control system. Over the next two days, nuclear safeguards inspection practices took place in two-person groups at the reactor hall of the power plant. Simulating classical nuclear safeguards inspections, the inspectors carried out inventory verification and measurements in the fresh fuel storage, inspected the spent fuels in the spent fuel pond, and practiced the application of the containment and surveillance systems used by the IAEA. During the inspections, the inspectors investigated the locations where undeclared nuclear material or activity traces could be detected.

At the end of the course, the four inspectors had a practical test on the different activities of a safeguards inspection, supervised by three IAEA instructors.

The IAEA has expressed their thanks to the Nuclear Safety Department of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant and the Department of Radiation Sources, Safeguards and Security of the HAEA for successfully conducting the training.
