Amendment of the Act on Atomic Energy

2021.11.11

On 9th November, the Hungarian Parliament adopted the amendment of the Act on Atomic Energy, which will enter into force in several stages after its promulgation. The Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority will be more independent financially and organizationally, while it keeps its regulatory independence, which will provide the framework for efficient work even with the expanding tasks.

It is a significant change that the President of the HAEA reports directly to the Parliament on the activities of the authority. It is also important to highlight that the regulatory task will also be extended by legislative power.

As a result of the amendment to the legislation, the organizational independence of the nuclear safety regulator will be strengthened. Accordingly, it will define its own organizational structure within the legal framework, and it will determine the number of its staff taking into account the available budget.
