working group

The International Atomic Energy Agency IGALL (International Generic Ageing Lessons Learned) working group No. 4 held its meeting at the Headquarters of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority from 26 February to 1 March 2019. The purpose of the WG4 is to compile a Safety report summarizing the experiences of participating national authorities in preparation for the Long Term Operation (LTO) and aging management in connection with regulatory activities starting from the establishment of the legal framework and finishing with the activities post/after licensing LTO. The Safety report will reflect experiences and practices which can be useful for regulatory bodies in different phases of LTO.

IGALL is an extrabudgetary program of the IAEA for nuclear power plants, whose purpose is to assist regulators and operators of nuclear power plants to maintain the required safety level during operation, taking into account the existing degradation and aging mechanisms, and to provide generic support in identification of criteria and practices at the national level applicable to long term operation of the plants. The IGALL program has a long history, WG4 was only formed in the 4th phase of the activity. In the previous phases, intensive work had been done to develop several documents (e.g. general ageing management programs, time-limited ageing analyzes, etc.). WG4 was established in the summer of 2018, aiming at the compilation of a Safety Report for regulatory bodies in connection to LTO. The present event was the second meeting of WG4, which will be followed this year with another one. As a result of the hard work done by WG4 members, the document was significantly improved and hopefully, the document will be finalized during the third, last meeting of WG4.

The HAEA has already issued the operational license of the last unit (No. 4.) of Paks NPP for additional 20 years beyond the designed 30 years’ lifetime. The new license is valid from 1 January 2018 till 31 December 2037.
