Meeting with the Director of the Australian Nuclear Authority

At the meeting on 7 December 2023, the two leaders discussed a wide range of issues. Andrea Beatrix Kádár, President of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA) gave an overview on legislative changes affecting the status of the HAEA, and the HAEA’s participation and work in the relevant international organisations related to the preparation for the regulatory supervision of small modular reactors. Alistair Knight, Safeguards and Non-proliferation Director of the Australian authority was informed about the nuclear safeguards system in Hungary, in particular the rules for new-build blocks according to which the technical requirements for the nuclear safeguards system to be installed at the new power plant should be addressed already at the design phase. The nuclear safeguards system guarantees, in particular, the use of nuclear energy for exclusively peaceful purposes.

The Director provided information on the operation of the Australian registry system of nuclear materials and its relation to the Euratom nuclear safeguards system.

Furthermore, in the light of the new status of the HAEA, the opportunities for cooperation between the two countries' authorities was reviewed.
