HAEA’s President had a bilateral meeting with high level officials of CTBTO

On the 2 July 2024 Ms Andrea Beatrix Kádár, President of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority took part in the high-level segment of the Build-up Exercise organized by the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) at Gyöngyös-Mátrafüred and had a bilateral meeting with the CTBTO’s high level officials. The President underlined the importance of the Treaty and Hungary’s unwavering commitment to support the activities of CTBTO.


During the meeting with senior officials of the CTBTO, Ms Kádár noted that Hungary was delighted to offer its expertise and support for such an important exercise. „The CTBTO’s capabilities make it a unique and essential element of our global security regime. Training and exercises are key to ensuring that all elements of the on-site inspection are functioning well together. As a strong advocate of the Treaty, Hungary will continue to support the CTBTO and work towards its universalization.” emphasized the president.

Oleg Rozhkov, Director of the On-Site Inspection division noted the critical role of on-site inspection in maintaining the ban on nuclear testing: “On-site inspection is an essential element in the verification system because definitive evidence can only be gained on the ground, and it gives confidence to all States that no one can conduct a test in secret.” At the same time he thanked Hungary for its support, commitment and contribution to the success of the exercise.

The CTBT is an essential component of the international nuclear arms control and disarmament framework, aimed at stopping nuclear weapon tests and the development of nuclear weapons.
