The Contracting Parties to the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management held their eighth Review Meeting in Vienna from 17 to 28 March, where the Hungarian national report was presented and discussed. Hungary was represented at the Review Meeting by a delegation led by the President of the HAEA, Andrea Beatrix Kádár.
In addition to the HAEA, the delegation included the representatives of the Ministry of Energy, the Public Limited Company for Radioactive Waste and MVM Paks Nuclear Power Plant Ltd.
In her presentation, Ms. Kádár touched upon the major legislative changes, regulatory proceedings, changes in the legal status and organization of HAEA and developments in international relations since the last Review Meeting, highlighting in particular the 2022 IAEA ARTEMIS mission’s findings.
On the basis of the report of the review meeting, the Review Meeting concluded that the Hungarian practice of radioactive waste and spent fuel management complies with the requirements of the Joint Convention.
The newly implemented two-step method of involving the public and stakeholders during facility-level permitting was recognized as a good performance.
