WENRA working group meeting at the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority

2022.10.07

The Western European Nuclear Regulators Association (WENRA) Reactor Harmonisation Working Group held its autumn meeting in Budapest from 27 to 30 September 2022, hosted by the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority.

The working group is responsible for a number of tasks related to operating nuclear power plants, including the revision of the WENRA safety reference levels adopted in Europe. It also discusses licensing issues for new nuclear power plants and the licensing of small modular reactors.

30 experts from 17 countries participated in the meeting; they carried out a number of activities, among others they assessed the proposals received from Member States for the revision of the reference levels. The reference levels developed by WENRA are very important, since they are incorporated by Member States into their legal framework. Therefore they have a direct impact on the regulation of the nuclear field.

Another important section of the meeting focused on how nuclear installations met the requirements set out in the reference levels (e.g. which specific technical solutions they implemented).
