Official Meeting of the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Hungarian Delegation on the margin of the 60th General Conference of the IAEA

The Hungarian delegation, led by Mr András Aradszki, Secretary of State for Energy Affairs in Hungary’s Ministry of National Development had a consultation with Mr Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, on the margin of the 60th General Conference of the IAEA. As member of the Hungarian delegation, Mr Gyula Fichtinger, Director General of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority also assisted the meeting.


At the meeting Mr. Aradszki emphasized that Hungary appreciates the tremendous work undertaken by the IAEA in various fields of nuclear technology.

“We believe that the highest standards of nuclear safety must be achieved in every stage of a country’s nuclear power programme and we consider the activities of the IAEA essential in promoting nuclear safety throughout the world.” - said the Secretary of State adding that over the years, Hungary has greatly benefited from the Agency’s nuclear safety services.

Mr. András Aradszki talked about the major role attributed to nuclear power in Hungary and its long-term maintenance in the energy mix. He underlined that in accordance with the National Energy Strategy, Hungary intends to maintain the existing nuclear capacity. He expressed his gratitude about the fact that the IAEA had recently designated the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Centre for Energy Research as an official Collaborating Centre of the IAEA in Nuclear Forensics, which means that Hungary’s relations with the Agency will also be strengthened in the field of nuclear security.

At the meeting, Mr Yukiya Amano drew attention to the importance of international cooperation realized in the framework of the Agency, missions and trainings organized by the Agency and emphasized the value of the Hungarian partnership and the Agency’s intention to cooperate with Hungary also in the future.
