Lajos Vöröss, senior adviser of the HAEA dies

The Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority has suffered an irrecoverable loss; Lajos Vöröss, senior adviser, former Deputy Director General of the HAEA died on Thursday, 31 July with tragic suddenness. He was 68.


Born in 1940 he graduated in the Technical University of Budapest as a mechanical engineer. Between 1965 and 1995 he worked for the Electric Power Research Institute (VEIKI) in various positions from research fellow to chief research manager. From 1995 till his retirement he was Deputy Director General and Head of the Nuclear Safety Directorate of HAEA. From 2003 he worked as senior adviser representing the HAEA in several international forums. One of his outstanding contributions to nuclear safety was his participation in the development of the European harmonized nuclear safety reference levels. His expertise and international recognition have contributed to a great extent to the successful international activity of HAEA. Lajos Vöröss received his PhD in 1975 was the author of several scientific papers and coauthor of more than 40 technical reports. His scientific and technical activity was acknowledged by several awards. He received National State Prize in 1985 for his scientific-technical contribution to the installation of the Paks NPP units, he was granted András Szégner Award by the Scientific Association of Energy for his successful activities in different developments related to energy technologies in 1986 and Lóránd Eötvös Award by the Minister of Economy for his outstanding contribution to the high level of nuclear safety in Hungary.
