International Training Course at the HAEA: Physical Protection Systems Against Sabotage in Focus

2014.06.27

The International Atomic Energy Agency in cooperation with the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority held a training course about the physical protection systems against sabotage from 23 to 27 June 2014 at the HAEA.

Protection against sabotage has been substantial part of the design of nuclear facilities. Since buildings, equipment and materials need high-level protection in this field, and protection systems are developing continuously, sharing knowledge on an international basis is of great importance.

The first seminar about a similar topic had been held in Japan, this second course took place at the HAEA in Hungary. International experts (from the IAEA, Germany and the USA) as well as Hungarian professionals gave presentations about the physical protection systems and the IAEA guidelines during the five-day course.

During round table discussions participants had the opportunity to identify specific areas in their countries which need the highest focus concerning protection against sabotage. On the third day of the course attendees paid a visit to the Paks Nuclear Power Plant and the Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility.

From 18 countries 35 experts from nuclear facilities, regulatory bodies and police representatives participated in the one week event in Hungary.
