The training of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors took place in Hungary between 5-9 May 2025, organized by the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA). Hungary is an active supporter of the IAEA nuclear safeguards system in three main areas: support for IAEA training activities, development of new equipment and technologies as well as testing of new instruments and equipment.
The IAEA has been training its inspectors in Hungary in these three areas for several years and invites experts from, among others the HAEA as lecturers.
The IAEA’s nuclear safeguards system is aimed at preventing non-peaceful nuclear activities and the production of nuclear weapons and explosive devices. Verification under the Additional Protocol under which the training took place will provide more access to information and more effective verification to confirm that there are no on-going nuclear activities taking place on facilities that have not been declared to the IAEA or that the declared facility is not carrying out undeclared activities.
Training of the seven participants was supported by four IAEA inspectors, three HAEA inspectors and operators from invited organisations.
The inspectors were trained at the Centre for Energy Research, the Institute of Isotopes Co. Ltd., Radanal Lft. and the Mecsek Environmental Protection Base of the Public Limited Company for Mining Property Utilisation. The last two days of the training were held at the headquarters of the HAEA, where participants evaluated their experiences and summarized the lessons learned.
The IAEA representative thanked the participating institutions and the HAEA for the successful conduct of the training course.
