2013.09.16

A meeting on the project of upgrades of the physical protection system of the radioactive sources was held on 12 September, 2013, initiated by the U.S. government. Since 2009 developments have been implemented by the U.S. Department of Energy in the frame of the Global Threat Reduction Initiative (GTRI) in Hungary.

Representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Embassy, the Sandia National Laboratories, the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority, the Ministry of National Economy and the Ministry of National Development participated the meeting. In addition to professional issues, related to the projects, participants had a discussion about the potential VAT exemption. They agreed that several solutions should be surveyed in compliance with EU requirements. The American participants presented the details of the programme, underlining its impact on public security. They added that a lower VAT to be paid in connection with these investments may generate more developments in Hungary. The parties agreed that negotiation will continue.
