25th anniversary of the Support Programme to the International Atomic Energy Agency Safeguards

Mr. Yukiya Amano handed over personally the certificate of appreciation to Mr. Gyula Fichtinger, Director General of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority and congratulated on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Hungarian Support Programme.


In Vienna, the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC), Hungary, the United States and Japan celebrated together their anniversaries of their respective Safeguards Support Programmes to the International Atomic Energy Agency. The ceremony was opened by the Director General of the IAEA, Mr. Yukiya Amano who expressed his appreciation for the active support of the member states emphasizing that the contribution of member states to the IAEA safeguards system will always be vital.

In his address, Mr. Gyula Fichtinger underlined that within the 25 year old Hungarian Safeguards Support Program to the International Atomic Energy Agency Hungary did its best to offer its expertise and facilities to strengthen the IAEA’s safeguards regime in three respective fields of interest: hosting and development of different training activities; providing facility environment for testing of newly developed or novel safeguards technologies and equipments and supporting international safeguards verification capabilities by offering equipment and technology developed for national safeguards verification purposes.

Currently Hungary has 11 active tasks performed by the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority. In his closing remarks the Director General took the opportunity to express his special gratitude to the Hungarian partner institutions for their valuable collaboration. He stressed out, moreover, that Hungary continues to offer its skills and capabilities available in the safeguards field and is ready to seek and find new support programme tasks to further enhance the effectiveness of the international safeguards.
