2019.09.23
Field Test

The On-Site Inspection Directorate of The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) in cooperation with the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority and the Geolog Ltd. conducted a Field Test near Bánk, at an abandoned clay pit between 11-20 September 2019.

The Field Test aims to assess and validate the functionality and specifications of hardware, acquisition software and procedures for the inspection techniques. Through field operations and the processing of data, experts will gauge whether the equipment to be tested meets the specifications. Furthermore, utilizing knowledge gained during the Field Test, experts will review the concept of operations for these techniques, assess the status and relevance of the technical equipment for the detection of observables, and identify potential gaps and further development needs.

A team of geologist and seismologist experts arrived from more than 10 countries. They performed resonance-seismometric, active seismic and ground electrical conductivity measurements.

Several factors contributed to the success of the field practice, including the extremely good dry weather and the professional support from the Hungarian side.

The data collected will be evaluated in the coming weeks. The final assessment of the exercise will be presented at the April 2020 Plenary Session of the Working Group on Verification Issues of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization.
