The traditional annual meeting of the leaders of the Czech, Hungarian, Slovak and Slovenian nuclear authorities organized this year by the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority took place on May 14-15, 2024 in Balatonfüred, Hungary. Partner authorities of Finland and Poland also participated in this year’s event. The Hungarian delegation was led by Andrea Beatrix Kádár, President of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority. The participants of the meeting presented the most important organizational and legislative changes affecting their regulatory activities, discussed the challenges of the existing national regulatory mechanisms, and reviewed the regulatory tasks related to the construction of new nuclear power plants, including small modular reactors. Additionally, representatives of the participating authorities gave an overview on events affecting the safety of supervised nuclear facilities and shared their experience of cooperation at both EU and international level.
With a view of the upcoming Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (in the second half of 2024), the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority informed the participants on the work plan of the working group dealing with nuclear issues.
Furthermore, the meeting provided an opportunity to review issues of jointly implemented EU projects focusing on the capacity building of nuclear safety authorities in third (non-EU) countries.
The next meeting will be held in Slovenia in 2025.
