IAEA inspectors' training in Hungary

2023.05.24

The training of the IAEA inspectors about the Additional Protocol in the framework of the Hungarian Support Programme, was organised by the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority between 15 and 19 May 2023. The purpose of the inspections according to the Additional Protocol is to assure the absence of nuclear activities in facilities undeclared by the state to the IAEA and the absence of undeclared activities in declared facilities.

Hungary provides regular and effective support to maintain and further develop the IAEA’s nuclear safeguards system, mainly in three areas: IAEA training activities, testing of new instruments and equipment, and development of equipment and technologies.

The nine participants were assisted by instructors from the IAEA, HAEA experts and operators of other organisations involved in the training. The inspectors performed various field exercises and tasks at the Centre for Energy Research, the Institute of Isotopes Ltd., Radanal Ltd., and at the closed uranium mine in Kővágószőlős. The last two days of the training were held at the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority, where participants evaluated their experiences and summarised the lessons learned.

The representative of the IAEA thanked the HAEA and other Hungarian organisations involved for their successful conduct of the training.
