On May 23, 2024, the international expert group of European Nuclear Safety Regulators’ Group (ENSREG) visited the site of the Budapest Research Reactor. The purpose of the visit was to discuss the National Assessment Report prepared during the European Union’s Topical Peer Review II (TPR II) self-assessment process and related expert questions. Based on the visit, the experts could formulate and finalize their recommendations and identify good practices, which could be useful for other European Union member states. The topic of the visit, in line with the objectives of TPR II, was fire safety/fire protection issues, primarily in research reactor-type nuclear facilities.
The ENSREG expert group was accompanied to the site visit by the representatives of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority, the National Directorate General for Disaster Management of the Ministry Of The Interior and the Metropolitan Disaster Management Directorate, in order to ensure first-hand and comprehensive answers to all questions raised by the experts.
During the event, the experts visited the facility, and then discussed the questions with the representatives of the Hungarian organizations. As a result of the walk-down and the discussions, the experts formulated comments and recommendations, which were in accordance with the findings made during the Hungarian TPR II self-assessment.
The expert delegation of ENSREG appreciated the openness and cooperation of representatives of the Budapest Research Reactor and the authorities. In addition to the comments/recommendations good practices were also identified in the Hungarian national practice both on the side of the Licensee and the authorities.
